Park Run Age-Graded Score Description

What Is Age-Graded Scoring?

Age-graded scoring is a mathematical system that compares your running performance against the world-best standard for your age and gender. This method is based on the official WMA (World Masters Athletics) tables.

Why Use Age-Grading?

  • Normalize performances across all ages and genders
  • Compare your progress over time
  • Identify performance tiers from recreational to elite

How the Score is Calculated

The score represents the percentage of the world-standard performance you achieved.

Formula:

Age-Graded Score (%) = (Standard Time / Your Time) × 100

Definitions:

  • Your Time: Your actual finish time in seconds
  • Standard Time: World-best time for your age and gender from WMA tables

Example:

A 45-year-old female completes a 5K in 23:30. The WMA standard for her age/gender is 18:00.

(1080 / 1410) × 100 = 76.6%

Important Considerations

  • Scores are undefined for ages under 5
  • Results for ages above 100 are approximated using maximum WMA values
  • Binary gender input is required (non-binary support is in development)
  • Scores can exceed 100% for world-record-breaking performances
  • Invalid inputs (e.g., 0:00) will result in an error

Real-World Case Studies

Case 1: Veteran Excellence

James, 67, runs a 5K in 24:00. WMA standard: 20:45

(1245 / 1440) × 100 = 86.5%

James' result shows elite capability for his age.

Case 2: Youth Benchmarking

Emily, 29, finishes in 21:30. World-best for women: 14:44

(884 / 1290) × 100 = 68.5%

Her score reveals strong but non-elite conditioning.

Only for children aged 5 and up. WMA tables do not include standards for younger children.

Currently, the system uses binary gender-based tables. Inclusive scoring methods are being explored as standards evolve.

No. The calculator assumes flat, certified courses. Hilly or off-road courses may distort real-world equivalence.

Yes. The World Masters Athletics updates tables periodically to reflect new performances and refine age factors.

Scores between 60–70% are typical for recreational runners, while 70–80% indicates competitive strength.
